I think you answered your own question:

Is this look actually appeal to truck buyers?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Was the design directive “we want other drivers to think there’s a tractor trailer behind them”?

Drivers of giant trucks are usually overcompensating, so yes, they want to look like they’re driving something big to make up for smaller things.

Th e Answer is yes and yes, pickups are supposed to look like rigs because people bought a lot of Dodge pickups in the 90s when they started looking like them.

If they’re mimicking big and strong, others might think they are getting big and strong just like the real big and strong.

If you imitate tractor trailer, some might think they are getting a tractor trailer

Make it so it reads right when looked at through a rear view mirror and I am down with it. Didn’t some car from way back when have the rear view mirror readable front script feature?  Or maybe backup cameras that recognize backwards script and fix it.

Of the big three trucks, RAM edges out a win for me. GM is going so angular and blocky that their trucks would feel at home in a Halo game. That has a lot of appeal for some folks (including me when I was a teen), so it’ll probably sell well.

Ford’s still in love with their bar grille. They also like futuristic angles, but not to GM’s extreme . It probably looks pretty okay in the flesh (I can't remember if I've seen one yet) . I can’t say I’ve ever hated the look of a recent Ford truck.

Kinja'd!!!

And finally RAM. I’ve always been fond of the looks of the FCA era RAM. Not a huge fan of the chrome grille but the grilles do apparently also come in body colour.

Pepperidge Farm remembers.....

Seriously, though, there was a time when pickups had bench seats, vinyl floors, crank windows, long beds, and simple drivetrains— for w hen you needed something tough, but cheap, to haul and pull and move cargo.

Now, the vast majority of “trucks” are just commuter cars that go to and from the office, and carry kids on the weekends. So people want lots of seating, big doors, leather, bluetooth, fancy sound and navigation, power everything, a quiet smooth ride, and 17-zone climate control. Those are all great, but they are the reasons new pickups cost more than luxury sports sedans.

I’d wager it appeals greatly to the bro-dozer set. Though the ugly headlamp styling is probably driven by the need to have them mounted lower due to how much higher the trucks ride. Ford did the same thing when they released the 2008 Super Duty, which I thought was rather ugly.

Ford seems to have taken the regulation of ‘headlights must be located between 24" from the ground and no higher than 54" from the ground’ and made the front of the truck A WALL OF LIGHT from 24" through 54"

What makes me crazy about all these new, bright DRLs is that people think their lights are on when they’re actually not. I drove home from work behind a Mustang, and must have flashed him half a dozen times trying to get him to turn on his lights. When I finally got around him, I could tell he had his DRLs on and was illuminating the road in front of him just fine (there were also some lights on the highway and plenty of traffic ), but his headlights/ taillights weren’t on (dangerous).

Kinja'd!!! functionoverfashion > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
12/04/2018 at 11:01

Kinja'd!!!0

This isn’t a new problem, but it’s definitely getting worse. The other thing is digital dashboards. It used to be (most often) that your dash lights wouldn’t be on unless your headlights were on, but with a screen, it looks the same all the time.

This is for sure a pet peeve of mine, in particular after I once got a ticket for not having lights on, driving a friend’s car with DRLs and dash lights that were always on. In a busy area with streetlights and lots of traffic, there’s no way I could have known my lights weren’t on, unless I’d noticed the position of the switch.

My gauges are dark unless my head lights are on (new Tacoma). In low light situations like dawn or dusk, my  DRLs are more than bright enough to be safe for oncoming traffic.

Driving an unfamiliar car it’s an easy mistake to make. My old Pathfinder had no dash light to show you whether your lights were on or not (this should be a thing on every car).

Touche! Though I’d say the RAM is still the better of the even bigger three. It doesn’t use gargantuan headlights and the massive grille could be worse, I suppose. I’ve seen a few of the HD RAMs in the flesh and I like them. lol

12/04/2018 at 11:20

Kinja'd!!!0

Your Tacoma does it right; no surprise, I suppose.

So if DRLs are mandated for safety, why are taillights not also mandated (or just ‘automatic-on lights by default?’ Like, early ‘00's GMCs that had a switch whose default position was ‘auto-on’ - you could override that but it would spring back to auto-on and reset the next time you started the vehicle. I’m guessing fuel efficiency, however small a difference it may be.
